Das Internationale Rechtsinformatik Symposion IRIS findet 2024 bereits zum 27. Mal statt und hat sich als größte und bedeutendste wissenschaftliche Tagung in Österreich und Mitteleuropa auf dem Gebiet der Rechtsinformatik einen festen Platz erobert.
Der Schwerpunkt der Tagung liegt im Informationsaustausch der führenden österreichischen aber auch internationalen Rechtsinformatiker/innen über die rechtsdogmatischen, technischen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und philosophischen Fragestellungen des Rechts in der Wissensgesellschaft.
Das Leitthema 2024 ist: Juristische Sprachmodelle
Die IRIS Konferenz ist bekannt für ihre interdisziplinäre Ausrichtung als auch die Einbeziehung der Verwaltung, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft. IRIS24 will nicht die Thematik der Plattform dominieren; die Vortragenden bestimmen letztlich das Programm mit ihren Vorschlägen.
RI§24, das 27. IRI§, möchte – neben Fortführung der bisherigen Themen – einen weiteren Schwerpunkt zu „Juristischen Sprachmodellen“ setzen (Large Linguistic Models (LLM) in Law). Der IRIS-Trustee beschäftigt sich seit über 30 Jahren intensiv mit Information Retrieval und Rechtsdatenbanken – auch hier ist ein korpus-basiertes Sprachmodell notwendig, wenn auch in der abstrakten Form der booleschen Suche mit Abstandsoperatoren in Volltext und Metadaten. Was früher gute Rechercheure als Expertise hatten – einige gibt es noch heute – muss heute die Rechtsdatenbank leisten. Aber wie? ChatGPT zeigt nur auf, was man viel sehr viel Aufwand und Training erreichen kann. Auch hier gilt: was für die allgemeine Sprache gut funktioniert, muss in der juristischen Welt mit seiner sehr technischen Sprache noch lange nicht mit der nötigen Qualität anwendbar sein.

Bis 31. Oktober 2023 hätten wir gerne die Vortragsvorschläge und Papers. Noch mehr als 4 Monate, aber die vergehen schnell. Daher bitte schon jetzt Thema sichern – hochladen von Titel und kurzem Abstract – und dann möglichst rasch, aber bis Ende Oktober ein Paper oder einen längeren Abstract hochladen. Beiträge werden einem Review unterzogen, aber wir wollen – wie immer schon – möglichst inklusiv sein.

Ort 2024 (geplant): Salzburg, um unserem Beiratsmitglied und langjährigen Lokalen Vorsitz Prof. Dr. Dietmar Jahnel einen würdigen Abschied zu geben – und ihn – hoffentlich – zu einem Vortrag zu gewinnen.
Wir sind ja ein Symposion und kein Symposium – neben der Wissenschaft darf es nicht an Entspannung, Genießen, Sport und Kultur mangeln.
Juristenball 2024 (Samstag 10. Februar 2024), Skifahren in St. Johann im Pongau, … so unsere Ideen. Das IRI§-Sommertrimester und das IRI§-Wintertrimester wird es auch wieder geben – zum „Aufwärmen“ sowie zum „Fading-in“ zum nächsten IRI§-Jahr.
Auch angedacht – ein Lapland-Seminar in Pyhä/Rovaniemi – in einer tollen Lodge der University of Lapland/Lapin Yliopisto, mit den Optionen des Nordens – Skifahren, Langlaufen, Wandern, Nordlichter bewundern, etc. etc.

The International Legal Informatics Symposium IRIS will take place for the 27th time in 2024 and has firmly established itself as the largest and most important scientific conference in Austria and Central Europe in the field of legal informatics.
The focus of the conference lies in the exchange of information between leading Austrian and international legal informatics specialists on legal dogmatic, technical, economic, social and philosophical questions of law in the knowledge society.
The main topic for 2024 is: Legal language models
The IRIS conference is known for its interdisciplinary orientation as well as the involvement of administration, business and civil society. IRIS24 does not want to dominate the topic of the platform; the speakers ultimately determine the program with their suggestions.
IRI§24, the 27th IRI§, would like – in addition to continuing the previous topics – to set a further focus on “Large Linguistic Models (LLM) in Law”. The IRIS trustee has been working intensively with information retrieval and legal databases for over 30 years – a corpus-based language model is also necessary here, albeit in the abstract form of Boolean search with distance operators in full text and metadata. What good researchers used to have as expertise – some still exist today – the legal database has to provide today. But how? ChatGPT only shows what can be achieved with a lot of effort and training. The same applies here: what works well for general language does not necessarily have to be applicable with the necessary quality in the legal world with its very technical language.

We would like to have the presentation proposals and papers by October 31, 2023. More than 4 months left, but they will pass quickly. Therefore, please secure the topic now – upload the title and a short abstract – and then upload a paper or a longer abstract as soon as possible, but by the end of October. Submissions will be reviewed, but as always, we aim to be as inclusive as possible.

Location 2024 (planned): Salzburg, to meet our advisory board member and long-time local chairman Prof. Dr. Dietmar Jahnel a worthy farewell – and – hopefully – to win him over for a lecture.
We are a symposion and not a symposium – in addition to science, there must be no lack of relaxation, enjoyment, sport and culture.
Lawyers‘ Ball 2024 (Saturday, February 10, 2024), skiing in St. Johann im Pongau, … that’s our idea. The IRI§ summer trimester and the IRI§ winter trimester will also be there again – to „warm up“ and to „fade in“ to the next IRI§ year.
Also planned – a Lapland seminar in Pyhä/Rovaniemi – in a great lodge at the University of Lapland/Lapin Yliopisto, with the options of the north – skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking, admiring the northern lights, etc. etc.
