The 23rd IRIS will again take place in the familiar environment of the University of Salzburg from 27-29 February 2020 under the motto “Responsible Digitalization”.
Digitalization is increasingly shaping our daily lives. Daily news, information websites, communication tools, apps as well as digital contracts and administrative procedures are reality and taken for granted. Digital offices, goods and services via e-commerce, data-driven industrial production, the use of AI and robotics are the characteristics of this knowledge and network society. The Internet, the network of networks, offers the necessary infrastructure, which will be expanded even more as digitalization progresses. Smartphones are becoming an indispensable digital companion. Artificial intelligence is on everyone’s lips and fundamentally changes production and working conditions. The ethical and social components of this profound change are becoming increasingly central.
But these advances polarize, as can be seen, among other things, from the example of artificial intelligence: is a futuristic utopia awaiting us or are we moving towards the Orwell surveillance state predicted by critics?
How can we follow the path of digitisation responsibly, i.e. in a way that serves people? What measures must we now take to meet the coming challenges of digitisation – be it the daily hurdles or even the possible singularity? An essential approach are ethical guidelines for AI and robotics.
The law must ensure a balance of interests. The development must not be hindered, but must be designed in such a way that the negative effects are largely suppressed. Human dignity must not be endangered and human freedom must be preserved. Free access to data, knowledge and software tools is essential for the participation of all in digitisation.
This main topic concerns all major questions of legal informatics: legal information, e-government, e-democracy, e-justice, legal visualisation, legal design, IT law, e-commerce, IP law, telecommunications law, e-procurement, Internet governance, etc. New approaches and solutions as well as continuous further developments will be presented.
The IRIS conference is known for its interdisciplinary orientation as well as the involvement of the administration, business and civil society. IRIS2020 does not want to dominate the topic of the platform. As lecturers, you ultimately determine the programme with your proposals.
