Das Internationale Rechtsinformatik Symposion IRIS findet 2026 bereits zum 29. Mal statt und hat sich als größte und bedeutendste wissenschaftliche Tagung in Österreich und Mitteleuropa auf dem Gebiet der Rechtsinformatik einen festen Platz erobert.
Der Schwerpunkt der Tagung liegt im Informationsaustausch der führenden österreichischen, deutschsprachigen und internationalen Rechtsinformatiker/innen über die rechtsdogmatischen, technischen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und philosophischen Fragestellungen des Rechts in der Wissens- und Netzwerkgesellschaft; als eine offene Plattform für Theorie und Praxis.
Das Leitthema 2026 ist: Zusammenarbeit zwischen Mensch und Maschine im Cyberspace
Schon 2001 war dieses Thema ein Schwerpunkt, damals unter „Auf dem Weg zur ePerson“; nunmehr, nach 25, Jahren erfolgt eine Bestandsaufnahme: Menschen – Agenten – Roboter und die komplexe Regulierung der Zusammenarbeit: Zurechnung und Haftung für Agenten und Roboter, Einsatzrestriktionen und Haftung für KI, Herausforderungen der datengetriebenen Wirtschaft und Verwaltung usw.
Trotz der (überaus) umfangreichen Rechtstexte sind viele Fragen offen geblieben, was auch an der unzureichenden theoretischen Reflexion der Grundfrage liegt: nach Jahrtausenden des Rechts treten mit dem Agenten bzw. Roboter neue Akteure auf, die (fast) wie ein Mensch handeln können, aber nach wie vor als „besondere Sache“ behandelt werden. Diese Hilfskonstruktion reicht nicht wirklich aus, aber noch fehlt eine bessere Lösung. IRI§26 soll interdisziplinär und ganzheitlich das Thema analysieren und Lösungsoptionen aufzeigen.

Wir sind ja ein Symposion und kein Symposium – neben der Wissenschaft darf es nicht an Entspannung, Genießen, Sport und Kultur mangeln. Geplant ist ein Get2gether im Juridicum, ein Heuriger und eine Abendveranstaltung im Wiener Rathaus.

The International Legal Informatics Symposium (IRIS) will take place for the 29th time in 2026 and has firmly established itself as the largest and most important academic conference in Austria and Central Europe in the field of legal informatics.
The focus of the conference is on the exchange of information between leading Austrian, German-speaking, and international legal informatics scholars on the legal dogmatic, technical, economic, social, and philosophical issues of law in the knowledge and network society; as an open platform for theory and practice.
The key theme for 2026 is: Human-Machine Collaboration in Cyberspace.
This topic was already a focus in 2001, back then under „On the Path to the ePerson“; now, after 25 years, an inventory is being taken: humans – agents – robots and the complex regulation of collaboration: attribution and liability for agents and robots, restrictions on use and liability for AI, challenges of the data-driven economy and administration, etc.
Despite the (extremely) extensive legal texts, many questions remain unanswered, which is also due to the inadequate theoretical reflection of the fundamental question: after millennia of law, new actors emerge with agents and robots that can act (almost) like humans, but are still treated as „special things“. This auxiliary construction is not really sufficient, but a better solution is still lacking. IRI§26 is intended to analyze the topic in an interdisciplinary and holistic manner and identify possible solutions.

We are a symposium, not a symposium – in addition to the academic world, there should be no shortage of relaxation, enjoyment, sports, and culture. A get-together at the Juridicum, a Heuriger, and an evening event at Vienna City Hall are planned.
